Did you know that nearly one quarter of Americans with diabetes don't even know they have it?
According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 23.6 million, or 7.8 percent, of the U.S. population has diabetes, and of those, 5.7 million are unaware that they have the disease. Unmanaged diabetes can result in serious complications so it's important to find out if you have diabetes, or are at increased risk for developing the disease.
Before people develop the most common form of diabetes -- Type 2 diabetes -- they often have a condition known as pre-diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 57 million people living in the United States have pre-diabetes and many of them don't know it.
